You Don't NEED to buy a $2,000 computer

(Although you may want to!)

So you thought you needed a Pentium to "surf the net"? Now you can get on with your 386, 286, 8088, or even Psion 3A, using the latest version of NetTamer from David Colston's Net Tamer Hompage
I used this program on a 286 with a 20MB HDD and 640K RAM to access my PPP account while I was in Korea. It's a DOS based program that allows you to telnet, ftp, or even browse the web (text mode for 286 or slower), or access POP-3 and SMTP mail servers. Being an decendant of old, tight, Welch miners, I personally think this is great!

BTW, if you are on your way to Korea to serve the U.S. military, Eighth US Army (EUSA) policy was permitting limited use (about two years ago) of the military email systems for Morale and Welfare purposes, (i.e. to communicate with family members in CONUS). The  Korean Wide Area Network (KWAN) could be accessed through dial-up using Class-B DSN lines (mostly 9600 bps, although I've since heard they've upgraded), and supported PPP, POP-3, SMTP or a standard terminal emulation interface, using simple communications programs such as MS Windows Terminal, or DOS based PROCOMM V2.4.

Since then, though, there has been an exposion of online email accounts available on the web. As with all things regarding information systems, change is constant, and OBE (overcome by events) is the prototypical state.
